First Tee Jitters

May 18th, 2008

How do you feel when you stand on the first tee, especially with friends, and strangers watching? Are you nervous? Do you just hope to just put the ball somewhere in the fairway? Do your hands shake?

Well, most of us get nervous, but there is a way that can help you relax. It’s called “being prepared” for this feeling.

The next time you are at your practice range visualize people watching your every move. Really feel that they are there watching you intently.
Then go behind your ball, do your pre-shot routine, look at the sky, hum softly, visualize your shot, and then set up to your ball.

Just before you swing, try to feel completely relaxed, take a deep breath and let it out slowly. Take one last look at your target, hold that picture in your mind and then, let it rip. Try not to think about your shot as you swing - just be as natural as you can.

Do this routine several times as you practice. By preparing for this feeling of nervousness, you will soon train yourself to relax at will.
